It's a woman's world - and we have choices! An average woman may use 10,000+ tampons/pads in her lifetime.. and non-biodegradable disposable sanitary protection is environmentally unsustainable and has a huge adverse ecological impact.
It's about You too:
· Tampons absorb more than just blood - many women may suffer thrush and other infections because tampons absorb normal secretions needed for a healthy pH balance.
· Tampons may contain artificial fibres such as rayon, these can cause tiny cuts in the cervix or possibly imbed pieces of manmade fibre into the tissue. This has been traced as a possible cause of Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS).
· The skin around the vagina and vulva is very delicate; disposable sanitary towels can dry the area too much, causing soreness, itching and perhaps making thrush more likely.
· The vaginal walls are the most absorbent part of a woman's body. Pesticides are used on cotton used in the manufacture of tampons and pads. The whitening process involves bleach - you may be in contact with bleach next to your skin, or inside you, for five or so days a month.
Alternative solutions are designed with both you and your environment in mind.
We sell the Mooncup, a menstrual cup - worn internally, you just take it out and empty it, wash it and put it back in.
Washable pads - these will last you several years. Many women report lighter periods and less pain (dysmenorrhoea) after switching to washable pads.
The Natracare range of disposable feminine hygiene products use certified 100% cotton, non-chlorine bleached, made using natural biodegradable materials with no perfumes or plastics.
The Luna Sponge is an unbleached, highly absorbent, small pored natural sponge. Ecologically farmed, this alternative tampon will last three months to a year with careful use.
